  • Majority of the time chain shop managers don’t even look through applications at all because it goes above them to area managers. In the Uk you can’t even leave a CV in a shop cause of data protection??? Filling in a physical application in a shop that’ll take like 30 minutes isn’t gonna give a good impression to anyone that works there as you’re eating into their work day for no reason. This video is so entitled hahahaha

  • Hi !! As someone who has worked retail since they were 18 please ALWAYS APPLY ONLINE. Most retail companies (not boutiques or small businesses) have a questionnaire on the application that basically will tell them whether you're a good fit for them and YES they will call you if positions are still open. Even though in the video she makes the manager come off kinda rude sometimes I've seen people coming in at THE WORST moments asking for a "hiring manager" and they will basically ask for your name and number ,tell you to apply online ,and then tell you to have a nice day." And I promise that if it's busy they will forget about you. Work on having a great resume and really filling out applications well so you are more desirable. And no it's not mean if you never get a call. It just means this particular store wasn't for you. Also never be afraid to get a recommendation from a friend ! Especially if you really think you can do the job well. During holiday seasons a lot of places rather hiring their employees family and friends for seasonal work then look for all new employees!

  • Quick tip: don't ask general shift workers. Even if they are aware the store is hiring (which 9/10 they don't, like me), they won't have the information needed for applications and interviews. Always ask for the manager, or manager on duty (or someone working in the office portion). Minimum wage workers are told jack shit by their managers lol

  • Okay I get why people think talking to the manager is always the best way to go, but realistically it's not. If you are in a smaller establishment then yes talk to the manager. If it is a big company (for example Walmart) dont waste your time. So I currently work for Walmart and I always tell people, never speak to a manager, here's why: When you apply on the application doesnt automatically go to the store you want to work for. It goes to a third party company who goes through a list of prerequisites and determines if you would be a good fit. They then pass your applications on to the store, while simultaneously sending you an email to the person being interviewed. The first time a maneger will even see your application is when you are at the interview. And given how many applicants come through every single day (literally thousands) you will not be remembered.

Everything is online and no one cares about first impressions of if you’re an axe murderer or something. Seeing that commitment to come meet the hiring manager used to be a great thing for making it look like you’re the most capable person to hire… it sucks. And if they don’t like your online app, then they don’t like you.

I'm a very socially awkward (I'm not just saying that either) teenager who looks lost like a deer in headlights all the time. I doubt I'd be good in retail but that's most likely the majority of the jobs I could have at my age. It sucks because I want to do good and get experience.. My parents aren't pressuring me to get a job I just want one but it just doesn't look very easy for me. >

I got super nervous and anxious about asking managers for an application and if they would say no or not. I know people will say "the worst they could say is no" but it still terrifies me and I hate feeling like a bother to the staff. Thankfully I applied online for a retail store and got the job. I've been there for over a year now. :)

  • Most employers go through a hiring manager. Who sorts out unqualified people. Just walking in without applying online makes you look pushy, needy and idiotic. This will put you on the bottom of the list or take you completely off the list. Employers want self sufficient people who don’t push for things, just do what their told. Calling to check on your application makes you seem needy and insubordinate.

  • Last week my friend and I were at a salad restaurant, and the manager was out of this world rude to us. He yelled at us and snapped at us when we asked him to add cucumbers to the salads. We went to the cash register to pay, and we asked them for the manager because that guy was rude. Turns out the man who had been rude to us WAS the manager, so we asked them if they had been treated the same, and they looked like little, abused children when they shook their heads and one by one told us that he has done the same thing to them in front of costumers before. They gave us a peice of paper with an email on it to email and to hopefully get rid of the manager guy. Before you apply for a job, ALWAYS meet the manager, because you could be working for an evil person who just screams at you in front of costumers.

  • Ugh it's the WORST when this happens! There's never any face to face anymore. (The passed 10 years it seems). Drives me nuts. How are they supposed to know if you're a good fit just by filling out an application online? You can't introduce yourself or anything.

    Adriana SAdriana S3 kun oldin
  • As a manager, I always try to be nice to the people who come in to ask about our hiring. We only do online applications but there's no reason to be mean about it. That being said I will not remember you, I have already forgotten your name, won't be mentioning you to the hiring manager and you'll probably be hired unless there's something terribly wrong with the fit. We /are/ that desperate. The things that don't get you hired are poor availability or asking for a crazy large amount of money (corporate has a set amount, it would be nice if it was more). Last year around this time we were hiring people without even interviewing them. So really just apply online please, it's not going to change any of your chances...

    MalikMalik3 kun oldin

And the kicker: these types of managers are usually the worst at managing anything yet they have the ability to stay in the same position way too long.

    • If the are that ambitious they should have followed the first step which is to file an online application.
